Malcolm is a senior lecturer in American history at Liverpool John Moores University. His current research investigates tabletop roleplaying games and their relationship with the nuclear age, a project that will deliver new insights into how people interpreted, understood, and attempted to confront this vulnerability, and the ways in which these understandings found expression in games, from both design and play perspectives.
He is currently writing a book on this topic, which he home to have finished sometime in 2026. He has also worked as a TTRPG designer. His credits include the dystopian science fiction game a|state, the Cold War meets the occult Cold City, and the post-apocalyptic Hot War.
