Director’s Update: 22 March

We’re inching closer to the Con!

So far, we’ve made good headway on most of the prep. We’re still liaising with our guests and finalising discussion points for the panels.

We’re also preparing the live stream, figuring out the production, designing the layout and overlays, all that malarkey. We should have more announcements about that in due course.

We still have spaces open for GMs, so we’d love for more GMs to sign up for the one-shots!

But the biggest update I have for you is the following story about our logo.

Derp Griffie

Derp Griffie

When we first announced Conpulsion, and before we commissioned an artist to design a logo, we needed a placeholder. So back in 23 November, Claire, our social media manager and resident artist, was faffing about on Alan’s iPad and scribbled in less than five minutes mocked up something that made all of us laugh, before we realised it really suited the brief of what we needed for the Con: it had the varsity maroon and gold colour scheme, and it looked like high school graffiti.

All things considered, it proved such an elegant design, and it truly summed up this year’s placeholder online events in lieu of a full con, that we decided to stick with this. And so a silly joke ended up being a really endearing piece of graphic design.

And Claire is talented enough that they can turn even the silliest of jokes when faffing about for five minutes into a delightful piece of art. This is why we’re thrilled to announce Claire as our featured artist for Conpulsion Lite.

You can check out their portfolio at:

We are currently setting up a RedBubble store, so you can get your Derp Griffie merch should you want some!

So be sure to watch this space.

Director’s Update: 8 March 2022

Firstly, on behalf of the Committee, I’d like to thank everyone for all their love and support these last couple of weeks. A lot of work went into organising the panels, and we are grateful for the enthusiasm our community has shown.

Our committee met today and for the most part we got to the grind when it came to the less glamorous admin of organising the con: figuring out our mailing list, writing questions for panellists, etc. We’ll be briefing our guests on the panels soon with the hope of having a clear and focussed discussion that we can get the most out of. And we will also be writing to people who’ve GMed in the past about submitting games to the con.

We’re still trying to figure out whether or not we can manage a charity live stream, balancing scheduling and availability. We hope to have more details about this soon.

On the whole, a productive meeting even that lays more of the groundwork for the events come April.

We set the bar quite high with our previous announcement. We are excited to follow it up with our second of two panels for Conpulsion Lite, a panel on one of the most anticipated releases in Scottish TTRPGs this year: a|state Second Edition!

a|state first launched at Conpulsion in 2004. It is fitting that we celebrate the release of its second edition in a similar fashion. This panel features Morgan Davie and Gregor Hutton, designers on the team of a|state, who are no strangers to the Edinburgh TTRPG scene.

Charity Announcement: Empty Kitchens, Full Hearts

The Conpulsion Committee is excited to announce that our partner charity for Conpulsion: Homecoming 2023 is Empty Kitchens, Full Hearts.

Logo of Empty Kitchens, Full Hearts: a blue put with a red heart over it
Empty Kitchens, Full Hearts logo

Empty Kitchens, Full Hearts are a volunteer movement in Edinburgh formed in response to the Covid crisis. They work to end food poverty by making free meal packs for those in need from donations of surplus food. Since April 2020, they have provided over a million healthy meals to people experiencing food insecurity.

Covid 19, and the disruptions caused by the pandemic, exacerbated existing problems of food poverty. The work that Empty Kitchens, Full Hearts do to support the people who are hit more severely by the inequalities within our society has never been more timely.

Moreover, they advocate for the better treatment of hospitality workers and they seek to build community resilience to address the problem of modern hunger. The community-based values that the organisation is based on further align with our own at Conpulsion.

Empty Kitchens, Full Hearts are a small, local organisation, where modest contributions such as ours can make a very big difference. Proceeds from Conpulsion: Homecoming, as well as any donations received for Conpulsion Lite, will go towards Empty Kitchens, Full Hearts in their fight against hunger.

You can donate to the charity via PayPal here. We will use the same link when hosting live events on the Geas Twitch channel.

Members of our community who experience food insecurity can contact Empty Kitchens, Full Hearts via their website to seek support. The organisation supports all individuals without judgement.

Members of our community who have the means to donate to the charity are invited to do so. Likewise, members are also invited to consider volunteering for the organisation should they wish to donate their time or get involved in the organisation.

Director’s Update: 8 February

Hi folks,

We just had a Conpulsion Committee meeting today where we got the ball rolling for a lot of things for Conpulsion Lite.

We’re still figuring out some minor admin hiccups, and that should be resolved soon. After that, we should be able to get the ball rolling with setting up our charity collections and announcing which charity we are partnering with.

We have also reached out to some amazing people in the gaming community and invited them to be guests at Conpulsion Lite. We are still working out the details, and we hope to have an announcement about this shortly.

In the longer term, we’re looking into bringing back the Griffie Awards for Conpulsion 2023. The Committee are still bashing our heads together to figure out how to run those.

Finally, we have commissioned a proper logo for Conpulsion: Homecoming by Angus Barker. Angus is no stranger to Conpulsion, having designed the logo for Conpulsion: Flame in 2020. We should have a new look for Conpulsion soon.

After we nail down these details, we will then subsequently be able to schedule the gaming event, charity live stream, and other bits and bobs for Conpulsion Lite and Conpulsion: Homecoming. Watch this space for more updates in the future.

Postponing Conpulsion: Homecoming

  • Postponing Conpulsion: Homecoming to 2023
  • Hosting Conpulsion Lite, a series of on-line events, this year instead

The Conpulsion Committee has been monitoring the Covid situation and the Scottish Government guidance. After careful consideration, we have decided to postpone Conpulsion: Homecoming to April 2023.

We acknowledge that this would be disappointing to many within our community. We were also looking forward to seeing everyone in person again. However, while Covid restrictions are easing off, we are erring on the side of caution because of the transmissibility of the Omiron variant and the risk it poses to vulnerable members of our community.

Moreover, even under relaxed rules, our usual venues are still operating at reduced capacity. Any event that goes ahead in these circumstances would be greatly curtailed. We decided that the sensible way forward would be to postpone Conpulsion: Homecoming to next year, when we can hopefully have a full con experience.

In the meantime, we are going to organise what we’re calling Conpulsion Lite on the weekend of 9 and 10 April. This will be a series of smaller events, such as a panel, one-shots, and a charity live stream, instead of a whole convention. We tried organising an on-line con last year, and it was just not the same. Rather than replicate that, we are going to try and make the most of what we have now, and offer a variety of things for people to drop in and out of as they please.

Our sincere thanks to our lovely community of gamers for your ongoing patience, support and enthusiasm. We will be back with more updates soon. In the meantime, you can watch this space, follow our social media, or get in touch via email.

We shall see folks virtually in April, and then in person again next year. Until then, I hope that:

Absence will not seem an evil
If it make our re-meeting
A real occasion.

Update Regarding Omicron

Howdy folks. We had a Committee meeting today where we continued looking into venues and Covid safety. So far, we have nothing new to report: we are still waiting on updates on venue hire.

Meanwhile, we are keeping an eye on the Omicron situation. We are going to carry on with planning the event for now. But we are going to monitor the situation closely and review where we stand mid-January, by when we are hoping to have a clearer picture of what’s happening.
